Autumn Term 1

We would like to welcome you all to Reception and hope you are looking forward to an exciting half-term!

We have been delighted in the way the children have settled quickly and would like to thank you for your support with this.  A focus for this term is to support the children to become familiar with the classroom and school routines.

The theme this half-term is ‘Me, Me, Me!’  We will be looking into what makes us unique and celebrating that we are all special individuals.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be teaching children about the behaviour expectations and routines of the day.  They will be learning the names of their new friends in class and how we should interact with each other.  The children will also be learning about how to look after the equipment in the learning environments.

At home you can encourage your child to talk about who their friends are and what they like doing at school, play games which encourage turn taking and to put toys away when they have finished with them.

Communication and Language

We will be encouraging your child to share their ideas and listen to others through circle time activities.  We will help to develop your child’s vocabulary and encourage them to use this during activities.

At home you can support us with this by using the words in the vocabulary pyramid below.

Physical Development

We will be helping pupils to develop their fine motor skills through activities such as playdough disco, threading, using tweezers and pegging.  This will help your child to strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers in order for them to hold a pencil correctly when writing.

We will have 1 session a week when your child will change into their PE kits.  PE will be on a Wednesday with the class teacher and a Sports coach.  Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school.

At home you can support us by encouraging your child to get dressed independently.

We have a daily core text session in which we read stories, talk about characters, sequence events in the story and predict what might happen next. We also use these sessions to model writing lists, captions and sentences.

At home you can help your child by reading regularly and supporting to write their name independetly forming the letters correctly).

The core text for this half-term are:

This term we will be continuing with Read, Write, Inc for those children that have transitioned from the Nursery which will be differentiated depending on what their level of understanding. For the new children we will be beginning to introduce this phonics program by introducing a new sound a day. To support your child with this we encourage you to also revisit this new sound in the home environment so they can consolidate this new learning.

Miss Braidley and Miss Lowther will be inviting you to a parent workshop to talk to you about how we teach reading using the Read, Write Inc program and how you can support your child.

In Reception we have two Maths sessions day.  Number basics focuses on counting, number recognition, number bonds and problem solving.  The Core Mathematics session focuses on further application of number skills and developing the children’s knowledge of shape, space and measures.

We are currently particularly focusing on children’s number knowledge to 20 and number recognition. We know the reception children will master this very quickly so we are looking forward to introducing further challenges!
